One of my biggest complaints while riding off road on a stock motorcycle is early-onset fatigue caused by poor ergonomics. Along with bar risers, footpegs are usually the first thing I change on my bike. I’m a relatively tall guy. I stand 6'3" and tend to feel quite fatigued after a 50–100+ mile desert ride when riding a stock motorcycle.

For whatever reason, likely cost savings, manufacturers equip their bikes with narrow and usually very short footpegs. As I’m sure you know, standing up while riding a motorcycle off road is the preferred method. It lowers your center of gravity and allows you to use your legs as additional shock absorbers when tackling some of the gnarlier off-road riding trails. But doing this on stock pegs can be exhausting as well as downright painful and, dare I say, dangerous when riding in wet, muddy and/or chewed up conditions.

BDCW traction footpegs review 1

Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW) has what I feel is simply the best option for comfort and control for your 500+-lb. adventure machine. The BDCW Traction Footpegs offer a whopping 2.5-inch x 4.5-inch platform to rest your weight on while tackling any big off-road adventure. I’ve found that the OEM pegs tend to dig into the arch or balls of my feet as soon as I stand up and get moving. It’s like the manufacturers went out of their way to try and hit every pressure point on the bottom of my foot to bring as much discomfort to my riding experience as possible.

By adding the extra inch of width and length, BDCW’s pegs distribute the rider’s weight over a larger area, eliminating early-onset fatigue and allowing the rider to get more miles under his or her belt, especially on those long multi-day rides. The Traction Footpegs are made from CNC’d aircraft-grade aluminum and weigh in at 6 oz. each. The newly designed Traction Footpeg has been updated to offer even better “traction” or grip as the pegs have a more aggressive cleat and threaded spike system. You’ll find this to be particularly helpful in wet or muddy conditions. The threaded spikes are removable and replaceable, which I found to be a nice touch. The Traction Footpegs are available for BMW, KTM and Honda’s Africa Twin. MSRP: Starting at $229 | Colors: Black, orange or anodized machine finishes BlackDogCW.com
