Sometimes big things come in small packages and the Electronic Jet Kit (EJK) by Dobeck Performance is just that. Everyone knows what the jetting process entails for carbureted bikes. In today’s digital world, instead of experimenting with jet sizes and float heights, fuel injected bikes can be tuned quickly and easily with a small electronic device that piggybacks off the stock wiring harness. Like many current models the CRF 250L comes lean from the factory, probably to meet EPA regulations and boost fuel economy. The EJK allows its user to add fuel during various times of throttle operation, as well as tune the transition between cruising, mid acceleration, and wide-open throttle.

Acceleration on ADVMoto's CRF 250L was unimpressive. It felt like it wanted to avoid performing, like a little girl shying away from getting on stage at a talent show. When she sang she was always in tune, strongest in her mid-tones, but reserved when it came to the high notes. We knew the potential was there but the CRF just needed some encouragement.

Installing the EJK was almost too easy. The side plastics and seat were the only things that needed to come off the bike. If your hands are small enough the tank can stay bolted on. We chose to place the control unit underneath the seat where the owner’s manual used to sit. Here, it would be unobtrusive and protected from the elements but still easily accessed in case we wanted to toggle the settings. The harness connecter and ground wire down were pulled down the frame towards their connection points.

The instructions supplied by Dobeck Performance recommended attaching the ground wire of the EJK to the negative battery terminal. Instead we used a factory ground location where Honda had already grounded components to the frame. Angled pliers were used to disconnect the wiring harness from the fuel injector. The EJK was then connected to both open ends and after making sure the cables were routed safely we zip tied them to the frame. The installation was complete, but before we buttoned it all back up we needed to check where the settings were.

To do this turn the key to the “On” position and the EJK should emit a light show. After starting the engine the lights will settle and green lights reflect the idle speed. Toggle through the menu to make sure each setting is where you want it to be. Recommended base settings are available right on Dobeck Performance’s website. We had to “dial-down” the EJK as it was shipped to us tuned for stage one mods and our bike’s air-box and exhaust are unmodified (for now). Reinstall the plastics and seat and you’re done!

The test ride proved a dramatic difference in performance. There’s a significant, linear, strong pull from the mid-rpms all the way to redline where it used to taper off. Off-on throttle transitions feel more sensitive and responsive. In fact, in 1st or 2nd gear at the middle of the rev range if you roll on, shut the throttle, then immediately snap it wide open the bike responds by lofting the front wheel easily. ADVMoto's CRF 250L now has a similar power delivery to a stock Yamaha WR250R.

Testing took place at the Stolen Pig Rally in Matewan, West Virginia. The terrain involved a lot of rocky hill climbs and wide, gravely access roads. We used to row up and down through the gearbox in order for the 250L to stay in the meat of its torque curve, shifting way before redline. Now we let her sing and shift at the limiter. The bike responds with flinging rocks and controlled powerslides. Fuel economy wasn't calculated but we can see the fuel through our clear tank being sipped a little faster. This might be because we're riding the bike differently, holding the gears out longer instead of short-shifting. Even if there is a slight loss in fuel economy, it's a price we’d happily pay for the boost in performance. If your bike is fuel-injected Dobeck Performance probably has an EJK that’ll work for you. In order to get the most out of your power mods, or even your stock bike, check-out Dobeck Performance’s website to learn more about their line of tuning products. MSRP: $225 DobeckPerformance.com
