Arai claims to have created the first dual-sport helmet back in the late 1990s. Even if this statement isn’t completely true, the XD4 features the attention to detail one would expect from a helmet that has been continually refined for over a decade. Its intuitive functions and thoughtfully placed vents are the hallmarks of Arai’s commitment to making one of the best helmets available today.

Constructed of a complex fiberglass laminate shell and weighing in at 3 lbs., 8 ounces in a small, the XD4 is relatively light. And, thanks to Arai’s thoughtful design, the weight is evenly distributed with a low center of gravity. The redesigned visor peak offers better stability, airflow and, combined with the new aerodynamic shell shape, keeps drag levels comfortable at highway speeds.

One of the greatest improvements over the previous XD3 is the addition of Arai’s trademarked brow vents on the shield. On hot days they direct airflow straight toward your hairline and significantly cut down on forehead sweat. When the weather gets cold, simply close all the intakes and the XD4 can still flow enough exhaust to keep from fogging up while you stay warm. However, if you frequently ride in cold weather the Pinlock system will be a welcome addition.

Once you’ve arrived to your off-road destination the XD4 is ready for some goggle action. You have two options: fully raise the attached shield or remove it completely. I found it easier to keep the shield in the upright position purely to avoid the need to pack the shield once it is removed. The visor edges and rear helmet shape do a great job of keeping the goggle strap where it belongs.

With the shield down there is some distortion in your peripheral vision. I attribute this to the aggressive curves needed to match up with the more aerodynamic shell shape and larger chin vent.
The XD4’s ability to remove both the visor and shield make it one of the best all-around adventure helmets. Commute during the week with the visor off, put it back on when you want to go romp in the dirt for the weekend. Complete versatility without the compromise.

My favorite feature of the XD4 by far is the customizable fitment. Peel-away pads at the temple and cheek allow you to dial in just the right amount of snugness. Combined with the Facial Contour Support it allows this helmet to effortlessly slide on while it remains more stable than any helmet that's this comfortable should.

The Arai XD line is nearly legendary in its multitasking capabilities and the new XD4 improves upon this lineage. If you only want to own one helmet for all your riding needs I would suggest the XD4. MSRP: $729.95 AraiAmericas.com
