gallery1HJC’s 2013 RPHA 10 is the company’s latest entry in its mid-price lineup, which began last year with the RPS 10 model. The RPHA (Revolutionary Performance Helmet Advantage) family also includes the RPHA Max modular helmet, and RPHA X motocross style helmet. All share a set of upscale features.

The RPHA multi-layer shells are composed of Aramid epoxy, fiberglass epoxy, carbon fiber and organic fibers. This translates to lighter weight, greater strength, and increased impact absorption in the shell itself. Its lightweight is evident the moment you pick it up.

gallery3Shape is important for fit, and the RPHA 10 departs from HJC’s typical rounder shape with an intermediate oval shape. The RPHA 10 fits my long oval head well, front to back, and was just a bit generous side to side. Overall, a good fit.

The plush moisture wicking anti-bacterial liner is removable. Two thicknesses are available in each size, with the thicker of the two installed as standard. Changing the shield is super easy. And the shield lock really does lock it closed for added safety at high speeds. The lock is on the shield’s lower edge in the center for operation by either hand.

On the road the RPHA 10 benefits from an aerodynamic shape that slices through the wind without the dreaded lift effect. Looking side to side at 70 mph caused no sensation of neck strain. Both top vents and chin vent are highly effective. Open them and you’ll immediately feel a substantial flow of air. The dual mesh screens on the chin are always open for gentle air circulation.

gallery5Noise levels are in the mid-range. Riding while leaned forward generated moderate wind roar at freeway speeds. When upright, the helmet was quieter. What you’ll hear may vary according to windscreen shape. The helmet was equally quiet whether vents were fully opened or closed.

The RPHA 10 comes with a clear Pinlock-ready shield, breath deflector and chin curtain installed. A clear Pinlock insert is included. Fit and finish are outstanding. HJC’s entry in the mid-price market wins by offering strong value with an upscale finish and complete feature set. It’s a worthy choice in the under-$400 category. HJCHelmets.com
