As a leading helmet manufacturer for over 30 years, HJC is no stranger to the business. I’m sure just about everybody reading this review has owned one or two HJCs in their riding career. Well, the folks at HJC have stepped it up a notch with the new RPHA line of helmets, which we first saw on display at the 2012 Indianapolis Dealer Expo, receiving lots of interest from the crowd.
The first thing you notice is the radically redesigned shell, from the aerodynamic nose piece to the edgy lines in the rear. It doesn’t stop there—the helmet is constructed out of HJC’s new P.I.M. (Premium Integrated Matrix) carbon fiber, Aramid, fiberglass and organic non-woven fabric. This combination is not only strong, but extremely light weight. Our solidcolor, medium-size sample was only a scant 2.92 lbs. The DOT 218- and Snell M2010-approved shell is offered in three sizes, XS-S, M-L, and XL-XXL. Fit is pretty accurate; I typically wear medium, and the medium fits perfectly. Both the RPHA Max and X models feel as though the interior shape is now a couple of millimeters longer, which should be more suitable for the general North American market.
Ventilation is impressive, too. It comes from HJC’s ACS (Advanced Channeling Ventilation System), with 11 intake, and four exhaust vents—pulling heat and humidity up and sucking it out the back of the helmet. The interior lining is HJC’s Cool4Ever, lightweight, moisture-wicking, odor-free antibacterial fabric with gingko extract. This combination has a soft feel and cools down faster than any other material on the market. The easily removed headliner and cheek pads are a plus for easy washing.
With all these advancements it’s safe to say that HJC is looking to take a bite out of the premium helmet segment. The ADVMoto crew has been wearing these helmets non-stop since we received them, both on the street and off-road. If you are in the market for a new adventure/dual-sport helmet with an off-road bias, I highly recommend checking this lid out at your local dealer. With its feather-light weight, excellent ventilation and upgraded shell, you won’t be disappointed. MSRP: $359.99 HJCHelmets.com
