Gallery1I just charged my iPhone while boiling water on the grill. That’s right—using old technology for new, the off-grid adventure company and Kickstarter sensation, Power Practical, has found a way to harness the power of fire to charge an adventure traveler’s ever increasing cache of devices with their thermoelectric generator, the Power Pot V.

Excited to see this simple yet elegant solution to power needs in the wilderness in action, as soon as my Power Pot arrived, I set to work starting the grill to charge everything with a USB port. As adventure motorcycle travelers, these days we all have ways of charging our devices off the bike, but as the number and battery capacity of devices increases, it’s a good idea to diversify your charging options and avoid the risk of a dead battery in the morning when camping off-grid.

In addition to powering with boiling water, you can also charge while simmering your soup, or anything that can come to a boil (don’t count on it to power while you’re sizzling your bacon). The Power Pot offers immense practical usability over something like a portable solar panel because you don’t have to worry about arriving at camp before dusk to deploy the panel or camping somewhere sunny.

When camping off-grid, you’re usually going to need to fire up the camp stove and heat something for dinner or tea. The Power Pot offers a practical, multi-use solution for both cooking and power needs, and harnesses the energy of something adventurers and survivalists have used as a key component in their tool kit for millennia: fire.

The Power Pot is easy to use, just as advertised, and comes with multiple charging tips. The high grade silicon handles and power cable will withstand 600 degree temperatures, so only direct fire will melt it. Power Practical products are currently available for direct sale at their website or at sporting goods stores including REI, Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops and Academy in Canada. PowerPractical.com MSRP: $149
