Many touring glove options are available in today’s adventure/dual-sport market. I’ve always preferred light, minimalist gloves that rely mainly on high abrasion resistance for protection. Low interference with finger dexterity, and how easily I can get them on and off, top my list of criteria for comfortable protective hand wear. The HMK Intimidators, however, aren’t those gloves. Their layered build restricts some movement and reduces feel at the finger tips. The gauntlet-style cuff makes them a little tedious to put on, compared to my usual short cuff gloves. Although the construction and style of the Intimidators are aimed toward protection, I wasn’t a big fan because of the lack of comfort. That is… until I crashed with them!

The crash itself was minor, but could have been a lot worse. I rode into a corner too fast, which resulted in an abrupt stop on the outside embankment of the turn. Much of my weight was pushed forward, bending my left thumb backward on the handlebars. Had I been wearing my regular lightweight gloves, my thumb would likely have been broken. We don’t often think of hyper-extension protection when choosing a glove, but in dual-sport riding there are many situations which can make your bike come to a dead stop in an instant. Your hands and wrists can be placed under tremendous stress on impact, and solid build quality and secure cuff enclosures are designed to offer support in such cases.

When I was first breaking in the Intimidators, they felt stiff and cumbersome while using hand controls. After a few good rides, they conformed to my hands and loosened up, giving me a full range of motion. The durable goat skin leather is double-stitched and reinforced in key areas, making the glove very resistant to tears and loose threads. There’s minimal air flow, as they are designed for cooler weather. That said, I rode many times last winter in near freezing conditions, and my hands were neither cold nor sweaty. The gloves are water resistant, but not waterproof, so don’t go jumping into any lakes or riding through torrential downpours. As far as abrasion and impact protection, HMK is on top of their game with 3D-molded knuckle protection, memory foam padding and Kevlar slide pads. The gauntlet-style wrist protection took some getting used to. I’ve always considered these types of gloves “dad gear,” but after testing them, I definitely see the benefit in keeping the cold out and I appreciate the extra wrist support. The Intimidators are a durable three-season glove suitable for both touring and light dual-sport riding and a great option for those willing to trade a bit of comfort for optimum protection.
