Even the most experienced riders know that there are variables on the road that you simply can’t control- animals crossing the street, HAZMAT materials, and bad drivers to name a few. Unfortunately we live in a world that is filled with lawyers and lawsuits. A craze for dash cams in automobiles has now become the norm and now the technology has made its way to the two-wheeled world with the INNOVV K1.

INNOVV offers a complete data and footage recording system designed for motorcycles (think black box recording devices on airplanes). The kit consists of a main recording unit, GPS module, wiring harness, remote and 2 solid aluminum body cameras with multiple mounting points and 140 degree wide angle lens to capture both sides of the road. INNOVV claims the lenses are weatherproof and will hold up to inclement weather. Most would think installing a dash cam means having a screen to see what the cameras are seeing, but this isn’t the case with the K1. The main recording unit does have a play back screen, but for safety reasons it is stored under the see so that you stay focused on the road.

The recording unit uses an automatic On/Off mode so that the camera starts recording as soon as the key is switched on. A loop recording feature means you only have to buy one SD card and won't have to worry about deleting old recordings. G-Sensors detect accelerated movements like that of an accident or sudden braking and saves the footage to the SD card. The INNOVV will record up to 5.5 hours of footage on a 64gb card and automatically records over old data, thus creating the continuous looping. Once the system is set-up, the K1 can even warn you if a vehicle is moving into your lane on the highway.

Installation of the unit is straight forward once you map-out where you’ll run the cables for the cameras. Then it's just a matter of removing plastics, and in my case on my KTM 1190 R, the gas tank. If you know where your switched power line is, use it so the camera turns on with the bike.

Besides the safety features of the INNOVV, it also work as an action camera to record you and your riding buddies. First time out with the unit was at the 2016 March Moto Madness rally which is famous for great footage opportunities, and I sure did find some. The recording unit logs your front and rear footage simultaneously which saves time when editing videos, and ensures you don't miss the action because your camera was facing the wrong way. Video quality is on par with most sport cams on the market today and the unit does everything it claims. We tested a first generation product which has been updated recently and although recording unit is not waterproof, INNOVV claims they are working on making that happen.

Almost half of all motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers of passenger cars or truck drivers. That being said, sometimes it can be hard to prove. You can’t put a price on peace of mind, but the INNOVV K1 is a high-tech way to add some assurance by recording the most significant moments during your ride, whether they're good or bad.
