These days it’s quite a task to make a big splash with new riding gear. With the continued growth of the ADV/dual-sport segments, companies are rushing to market their versions of the ideal ADV jacket. The key word here is “rushing,” and many fall short of hitting their targets with what today’s riders actually want.

The Moose Monarch Pass was an excellent riding suit that got buried in all the textile madness back in 2014. ADVMoto tested it in just about every extreme condition possible, with high rankings in most categories. Keeping in the game, Moose took feedback from customers and media alike to enhance its newest version, now called the ADV1.

The ADV1 jacket took the best of the Monarch Pass and added a few welcome changes to take it to the next level, while keeping the price reasonable for the serious adventurist.

Carried over from the Monarch Pass is the D3O body armor with upgraded EVO Pro XT shoulder and elbow protectors and Viper 2 back protector. Moose now uses SympaTex, which is 100% waterproof, optimally breathable, and 100% windproof—and believe me, I definitely tested its waterproof ability! High-abrasion, reflective denier overlays are used on the shoulders and elbows for extra safety should you go down. Visibility is enhanced with a highly reflective Moose logo on the upper left chest as well as carefully placed block lines on the sides and top of the collar.

The jacket is generously sized for the U.S., which gives you plenty of room for layering in extremely cold conditions. A stylish zip-in liner vest will keep you warm in temps as low as 20°F, which I tested on several occasions. I was really happy to see the fleece-lined collar and pockets with magnetic closures. The seven large exterior pockets stay dry in the hardest downpours. A magnetic rain fly covering the zipper is something that every motorcycle jacket should have, and a couple other nice features that helped me keep warm and dry were the cinch cords at the top of the collar and the bottom of the jacket.

Venting is more than adequate, with two large vertical vents in the center of the chest and two vertical vents positioned at the bottom of each side of the jacket. These vents pull the exhausted hot air out from the chest vents. I’ve always been a fan of this style of venting and it seemed that all my favorite manufacturers stopped designing gear with it. This is by far the best way to vent the heat and the ADV1 does just that.

Just like the jacket, the ADV1 pants use SympaTex to keep you dry and vented when body temperature starts to rise, and to keep wind out when temps fall. Sizing is similar to the jacket in that they’re generously cut for comfort. D3O EVO Pro XT is used in the hip and knee for optimal protection along with high-abrasion, reflective overlay panels all the way to the top of knee to protect from unpredicted slides. Full grain leather panels from knee to bottom of the pant keep your legs safe in the event of an accidental brush against a hot exhaust.

Venting is by way of full-length zippers that allow you to open the sides in extreme heat. The rear of the pant features two large vertical zipper vents that let heat escape. Moose uses a three-strap system and a waterproof gaiter for securing the pant tightly around the boot, helping to keep water from coming in at the top of the boot. Four waterproof pockets in the front assure plenty of space to keep your stuff safe and dry. Moose includes a removable bib/suspender system that keeps your pants up and your back dry. You can also zip the jacket to the pant and create a one-piece system.

Moose set out to produce a great riding system that had all the bells and whistles like some of the top brands in the game, but not break the bank. They hit the bull’s eye with the ADV1. When you set out on a lengthy adventure, your gear may be your only shelter—something you wouldn’t want to leave to a web special.
