It's the middle of nowhere and the middle of everything. An off-grid getaway in the guise of a wild-west town nestled in a remote valley, surrounded by some of the best adventure motorcycle trails in the country.

On the very edge of southeastern Utah, 3 Step Hideaway welcomes riders traversing the U.S. east to west on the Trans-America Trail, tripping south to north along the Utah Backcountry Discovery Route, or using the remote spot in Lisbon Valley for a base camp. At 3 Step, the “Livery,” a barn across the dusty dirt road and down the hill from the “Cantina” and “Bath House,” shelters motorized steeds and contains a cache of tools and the occasional spare part for riders in need. One interior wall is a Who’s Who of motorcycling stickers.... modern-day pictographs left by those who have passed through: Touratech, MotoDiscovery, TrailMaster, Wolfman... even Sam Correro, creator of the Trans-America Trail.

The warm hospitality of innkeepers Scott and Julie Stevenson make 3 Step a welcoming place. They’ve owned the resort since 2014, continuing the process of creating a destination from three weathered 1890s cabins and a root cellar.

Accommodations now include two large, well-equipped modern cabins, three rustic cabins heated with wood stoves, two tepees, and plenty of space for camping. Home-cooked food—healthful, delicious and substantial—and refreshments are served at the Cantina, the Hideaway’s main gathering spot, and a bath house with hot showers sits a few steps away along the boardwalk. The entire place runs on solar power, and Scott and Julie ask guests to take conservation of precious water and power resources seriously.

Sunrises and sunsets across the broad plain of the surrounding desert are always dramatic at 3 Step, with the distant mountains in silhouette. Pristine BLM land surrounds the Hideaway on three sides, meaning off-road trails are literally right outside the front door. Popular day loops go into the San Juan National Forest, the Dolores River area, the La Sal Mountains, Onion Creek, Slickrock Recreation Area and other Moab trails, Lockhart Basin, the Abajo Mountains, Hook and Ladder OHV area, Comb Wash, Butler Wash, Natural Bridges National Monument, Montezuma Creek, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, Hovenweep National Monument, Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, Goosenecks State Park, Bears Ears National Monument, and more.

Guests benefit from Scott’s expertise on area trails, as he helps design custom routes. In 2018, he began semi-annual “Rendezvous” events, providing GPS tracks for day loops for dirt and dual-sport bikes and riders at all skill levels. The first Desert Rendezvous took place in April 2018, with routes in desert climes at lower elevations. The Alpine Rendezvous, with routes at higher elevations, kicked off in August of 2018. The second edition of both events (April and September 2019, respectively) will include GPS tracks, four nights of camping, nightly campfires, showers and unlimited use of the shop and facilities, along with four suppers and four breakfasts, for $250. 3StepHideaway.com
