Food: It may be the only language capable of dissolving borders, anywhere. Not just any food, but dishes prepared and shared in such a way as to connect us with true cultural experiences.
Author Allan Karl is well on his way to contributing to World Peace in this way. His book Forks is a masterpiece compilation of 40 ancestral culinary delights from global kitchens, as well as a wonderful accounting of tales from his soulful three-year RTW journey.
Having been completely uprooted from life as he knew it, Allan hit the road on a ’05 BMW F650GS Dakar looking for something new. He found that no matter what the road dished up there was always an unfolding of compassion, generosity, and discovery around the next corner. And, through food and drink with our international brothers and sisters who opened their homes to him, the meals they shared were often the most significant events of his travels.
Through a flair for boldly descriptive words and gorgeous photography that craft his stories of adventure and danger, Allan paints the most colorful pictures of the beauty of humanity to accompany these hand-picked recipes, which represent the essence of each of the 35 countries he experienced.
Bolivian Quinoa SaladDuring Easter, I found it delightfully inspiring to bring one of Allan’s favorite Tanzanian recipes to life and tantalize the taste buds of our family. What sprang from the Forks cookbook on that beautiful Sunday was a coconut chicken curry dish known as Kuku Paka.
Out loud, my daughter read Allan’s story of travel through Tanzania and the Serengeti National Park as I doubled the recipe to feed the crowd. Allan’s bright spirit, along with one of the most delectable dishes anyone at the table had ever sampled, livened up our gathering. And we, too, toasted Allan’s view of the world—that a shared meal represents an opportunity to connect with others and overcome barriers created by our seeming differences. ForkstheBook.com
