The typical overland adventurer is attempting to be self-sufficient and prepared for any possible travel scenario. And yet this challenge is at odds with the limited places in which to store equipment and supplies in the vehicle. Adventure motorcycle rider and aerospace engineer Dave Thum saw an opportunity to improve how storage space is utilized and created the Kit Kube system for organizing gear in a vehicle. “The motorcycle is of course the most storage-challenged of all overland travel vehicles so it’s a great proving ground for a storage concept” stated Dave regarding the development process.
This new product is called the Kit Kube - it is similar to the packing cube category of products intended for use in suitcases for ordinary travel. However, unlike a typical generic packing cube the Kit Kube is designed to be used in rugged outdoor environments and inside vehicles driving on extremely rough roads that subject them to abrasion due to vibration. Water, dust, and vibration would destroy a typical packing cube and its contents within weeks or months. The Kit Kube is made from rugged 600 Denier Poly fabric and thick, highquality PVC. The transparent PVC panel on the top of the cube will allow users to see the contents of each cube thereby simplifying the search for the item they are looking for. The Kit Kube is flexible and can be overstuffed or flow around anomalies in the storage space if necessary (unlike a hard case).

Storage spaces in overland vehicles tend to be small and lack uniformity. Some spaces are not very accessible but are great for storing gear that may only be used in an emergency (assuming that space is accessible during the emergency). Larger spaces need to be subdivided to maintain packing efficiency and utility. Alan Feld, president of Sportsmobile West, said of the Kit Kube concept “The thing about vans, is that the walls and interiors of the cabinets are not square due to the egg shape of the exterior walls of the chassis. So if our interior cabinets are 14" at the mid-line, could be 6" at the top, and I think that is a good reason to have soft-sided storage, as it can "mold" to the space : should be a great fit for a Sportsmobile”.
The first three sizes for the Kit Kubes are:
- Small: 6.5” L x 6.5” W x 3.25” H (2.25 liter) $9.95
- Medium: 13” L x 6.5” W x 3.25” H (4.5 liter) $14.95
- Large: 13” L x 13” W x 3.25” H (9.0 liter) $19.95

In its first year of business the recipient of this donation will be the nonprofit ConserVentures. Roseann & Jonathan Hanson founded ConserVentures in 2010 and states its purpose as “We promote conservation through exploration. Exploration leads to personal connections, personal connections lead to awareness, and awareness leads to action, face-toface. ConserVentures helps make that happen”. Overland-Adventurer.com
