The 2016 EICMA presented several entry level adventure bikes around the 250-310cc range tailored for newer riders. The idea of a KTM 390 Rally, however, could attract new or experienced buyers and offer a starting point to move up in KTM’s models. Cycle World  created a buzz over the internet with the first images of KTM’s prototype 390. But is it?

From Cycle World and Motorcyclist Magazine's spy photos, we can see some obvious off-road traits: a high exhaust, long travel suspension and spoked wheels. The front end replicates styling from Husqvarna/KTM’s 450RR Rally racers, including a carbon tower, full rally fairing, and stacked dual beam headlights. In Motorcyclist’s photos, KTM appears to be experimenting with different wheel sizes. KTM is notorious for offering different variants of their motorcycles, so could this mean we’ll see two versions of the "390 Adventure " available?

Motorcyclist speculates that the prototype could be sporting higher displacement engine than a 390, somewhere along the lines of 500cc or 600cc’s, and we're  likely to agree with that.  The exhaust coming out of the head looks oversized for a 400-500cc motor. Also, we may be looking at the next generation 450 Rally competition motor based on a sleeved down 550. Pixel peeping shows the cylinder is a slightly different color than the head and case which likely means they're experimenting with displacement.  Based on the feedback we’ve been getting about other manufacturer’s small displacement adventure bikes, a bump to 450 or 550cc would have a lot of people finding ways to make more room in their garages.

The frame itself is either completely different or revised, while the prototype’s cradle-less design is carried over from the Duke 390. The hand guards resemble the same type on ADVMoto’s 1190R and the foot pegs and skid plate show the bike is clearly off road focused. In Motorcyclist’s photos, we can see adjustable front suspension as well.
