Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW), world renowned for producing top tier adventure and off-road parts and accessories, has just released their new ULTIMATE Skid Plate for the KTM 790 Adventure/R.

Maintaining a “keep it light” approach, this skid plate is a direct replacement of the paper-thin OEM part, utilizing the stock tank guards which have already proven their worth in testing. For those who want additional peace of mind, BDCW designed the ULTIMATE Skid Plate to work with popular aftermarket crash bars.

While the outer appearance of the skid plate may look similarly to the stock and other offerings, BDCW has learned over the last 12 years of designing arguably the most rugged skid plates on the planet, that without a robust mounting design to support the skid plate, the effectiveness will be very limited and prone to failure.

In addition, the 3/16-inch 5052 aluminum strikes the perfect balance of durability, weight and the ability to absorb the force of impacts, not only to protect the bike but to prevent cracking of the skid plate.

To address this, BDCW utilized the OEM front mounting framework, while the skid plate is further supported in THREE additional locations:

1. A large rubber shock block is placed under the stock support bracket at the center of the skid plate.

2. A second shock block between the skid plate and the engine block at the rear of the engine.

3. The rear mount is EXTREMELY robust and not only supports the skid plate but also addresses the weakness we’ve observed in the footpeg mounts, which will help prevent them from being ripped from the rear of the engine block to which they are mounted.

In addition, with our two-piece design, only 5 bolts need to be removed in order to perform regular maintenance. If you are using crash bars, unlike other designs, they DO NOT have to be removed to access the engine oil and filter.

As with all BDCW ULTIMATE Skid Plates, you will find a smooth bottom which creates an excellent glide surface with no holes to get hung up on. The flush-mounted hardware is one less thing to get caught on obstacles and damaged. For those who have had to fight getting a damaged bolt out because it protrudes from the skid plate, you will appreciate these little touches, and much more. And like everything else BDCW manufactures, this skid plate is MADE IN THE U.S.A.
