The Heart of the West Adventure Route is the easiest way to plan a backcounty trip yourself. It is the hub of North America's most extensive network of interconnected wildland-travel loops. A convenient, GPS guided network of adaptable loops through Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. Responding to requests for even more routes Backcountry Byways has developed new routes and revised their existing network.
The result is a modular looping system that weaves together many of North America's premier wildland travel routes. Optional Heart of the West Adventure route connectors are available from Northern and Southern California, even to Backcountry Byways' new Sierra to the Sea loop. The selection of new routes also includes connectors to the Backcountry Discovery Routes in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho.

Updates to the Heart of the West route for 2016 included a 200-mile extension through northern Nevada to the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route. A 550-mile connector between the H.o.W. roundabout, the Idaho BDR and their new 825-mile Northern California semi-loop. Lastly an optional 1,350-mile between Southern California and Heart of the West that links to both the Utah and Arizona Backcountry Discovery Routes.
This option includes: Mojave National Preserve, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, and the canyon country of Moab, Utah.
