Maggie Valley, NC, remains a popular destination for motorcyclists. First, the Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum located there exists as a compelling attraction with 3/4 million visitors since its 2002 opening. Also, Maggie Valley is surrounded by quality motorcycling roads, trails, and highways for everything from dirt bikes to cruisers.

gallery3The Blue Ridge Parkway runs just a few miles away, intersecting NC Route 19 west of Maggie Valley, a popular approach to the area. Dale Walksler,  founder of Wheels Through Time, informs ADVMoto of a potential hazard to motorcyclists approaching Maggie Valley from the Blue Ridge Parkway:
Shoulder drop-offs along NC Route 19 descending to the town.

The steep roadway produces fast rain and snow-melt run-off, resulting in erosion eating away at the shoulders of the road. Consequently, some severe drop-off may exist beyond the asphalt apron of the highway, a considerable hazard for any motorcycle whose wheels might run off the paved surface.

Walksler indicates the erosion and consequent shoulder drop-offs have been factors in serious motorcycle accidents; no particular signage or markings warn of the hazardous shoulder conditions. Repairs/improvements from the state highway department are sought.

Another hazard, this one signed, is elk along the roadway. A close encounter with a 700-pound elk could spoil an otherwise pleasant visit to Maggie Valley, the Wheels Through Time museum, and the delightful riding opportunities enriching the area.
