Online retailer All Ear Plugs recently launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the damage that can be caused by excessive exposure to loud noise. Following the campaign’s endorsement from a number of the rock world’s biggest up-and-comers, three of the biggest names in motorsports have also stepped forward in support. Corey Alexander, Melissa Paris and Jordan Imrie will all be sharing the message.

The endorsement from professional riders is incredibly valuable, with motorsport enthusiasts constantly at risk of hearing damage. 80dB is generally accepted as the ‘danger’ zone for hearing, and an average motorbike will generate noise levels over 100dB.

Corey Alexander, who competes in AMA Pro Roadracing’s Motorcycle Superstore Supersport Class said: “For me, I can’t ride on or off the track without ear plugs. When I find a comfortable pair that works well it really makes my riding experience that much better, plus it keeps my ears safe. Also, when I’m on the track it’s really important to be able to focus solely on the road ahead and not having tons of wind noise makes a world of difference.”

Wind noise can also be a bit of a ‘silent killer’ for riders, with the turbulence generated at high speeds capable of reaching 103dB. The combination of both noises means that riders are regularly exposed to levels capable of damaging their hearing within minutes.

Melissa Paris, who in 2013 earned her season-best 10th place finish in the Daytona 200 said: “The wind noise you experience when you're riding is really damaging to your hearing. Aside from that, I find that by cutting noise earplugs help me to focus and concentrate better when I'm racing.”

10 million people in the UK suffered from some form of hearing loss as of 2011, and it’s expected that the figure will reach 14.5 million by 2031. Meanwhile, ten percent have experienced tinnitus, a debilitating condition that is frequently caused by excessive noise. In the US, around 20 per cent of adults – 48 million people – have reported some form of hearing loss, and about 30 school children out of every 1,000 suffer from the condition.

Jordan Imrie, who has won four AMA Championships at Daytona commented: “It is so important to wear hearing protection when on the track or on the road. Causing damage to your hearing can be easily done when you love riding.”  Allearplugs.com started the campaign in order to try and raise awareness of an issue that still isn’t receiving the attention it deserves.
