Steph Jeavons set off from the Ace Cafe, London on March 23rd attempting to circumnavigate the globe on her Honda CRF250L. At age 39, she hopes to become the first Brit to ride her bike on all 7 continents and the first person in the world to sail a bike to Antarctica.
“As far as we know only 4 people have managed to get their bike over to the continent on larger vessels. No one has attempted to sail across these intrepid waters with a motorbike strapped to bow of a 40 foot sailing Yacht!” says Steph.
Being around motorcycles most of her life with family being riders as well, it’s safe to say it’s in the blood. Her grandmother even rode bikes during the war.
"I'm certainly no expert and I don't confess to being a demon on two wheels. In fact I am a bit of a potterer really. This adventure isn't about speed. It's not really even about the bike. It's about living, learning and enjoying! Doing this trip solo on a bike just opens up all the senses and allows me to be part of my environment.”
The route will consist of back roads and dirt tracks wherever possible avoiding motorways and seeing the world at a civilized pace. Honda’s CRF250L has been chosen for the journey. This is not your average adventure bike but is lightweight and easy to manhandle onto boats or into hotel rooms when needed. The CRF is a low cost, economical bike and perfect for life on a budget, parts are readily available across the globe, and Carnets are cheaper.
“It sits comfortably at an average cruising speed of 60mph and I can pick her up easily when I drop her and when I get the chance to unload all that luggage I have the perfect off road bike to play with. I have named her Rhonda!”
Steph aims to complete her trip in 15 months to 2 years, living with only the things she can carry on her bike. Her current budget for the entire trip is tiny, allowing herself just £5 a day for food.
"I will have to be creative in all aspects of this journey to make the money stretch. I am relying on the kindness of fellow bikers to give me the odd night in a comfy bed with a warm shower and a nice meal if I'm luck not to mention their local knowledge of roads worth riding. This is where the wonders of social media play a part"
Stranger things have happened! Who knows what is around the corner for Steph and her trusty Honda but one thing's for sure, it's going to be one hell of a ride!
She hopes to raise awareness for a great charity as well called Rally4Life, created from the founders’ vision to combine the desire to participate in adventurous life-changing activities whilst bringing meaning to those exploits by giving back to those in need.
